Freestyle Motocross and BMX Will Lead You to Things You'd Never Believe | Jed Mildon & Nick Franklin | ShedlifeNZ Episode 33
Jed Mildon is from Taupo. He landed the world's first triple backflip on a BMX, then came back and did the world's first quad.
Nick Franklin has spent his career in freestyle motocross, touring with Red Bull X Fighters and Nitro Circus, including one stint where he jumped a dirt bike over the Trojan Horse in Turkey. Both of them started by building ramps in backyards.
Episode 8 of ShedLife has two guests, and it is one of the bigger ones. Jason and Mark sit down with Jed and Nick for a couple of hours of proper stories.
A lot of it is about how it started. Both of them talk about the early days, the backyard setups, the local scene, and the progression from doing something for the love of it to doing it at the highest level in the world. That path is interesting because neither of these guys followed a conventional route to get where they ended up. They just kept pushing what they could do until the rest of the world noticed.
The Nitro Circus stuff is good. Nick talks through what it is actually like to be part of that world. Not the highlight reel version, but the day to day of being inside an operation that takes action sports around the globe. There are some good yarns in there about the people in that crew and what happens when you put that group together in different parts of the world.
Jed gets into the world firsts in detail. The triple was one thing. Coming back and landing the quad on top of that is another level of commitment. He talks through what that takes mentally, the preparation, the risk calculation, and what it feels like when something nobody has ever done before actually works.
Injuries come up too. You cannot have a conversation about careers like these without it. Both of them are straightforward about that side of things.
This is the kind of episode that reminds you why the podcast exists. Two blokes who went all the way with something they loved, and have the stories to prove it.
