Every time the All Blacks run out at FMG Stadium Waikato or the Black Caps take the field at Seddon Park, there is one bloke who has already been there for weeks making sure the surface is right. That is KJ. Karl Johnson is the turf manager behind some of New Zealand's most iconic sports grounds, and most people have never heard of him.
Karl joins Jason at the Shedquarters for Episode 2 of ShedLife, and it is one of those conversations that makes you realise how much work goes on behind the scenes at the venues we all take for granted.
KJ manages the turf at both Seddon Park and FMG Stadium Waikato — two grounds that host All Blacks tests, BLACKCAPS cricket, Super Rugby, and more. He talks about what it actually takes to prepare a surface to that standard. The science behind it, the obsession with detail, and the very specific kind of pressure that comes with knowing the whole country is about to watch your grass on live television.
There is a good story in there about his volunteer firefighting too. KJ carries a callout pager while he is running stadium schedules, which means he can be mid-pitch prep and get the call to drop everything. He talks about what it is like juggling those two very different commitments — one about precision and patience, the other about showing up fast when things go wrong.
He also gets into the world travel side of turf. It is not a career a lot of people think about, but KJ has taken his work overseas and to big international tournaments. And earlier this year he made it to Augusta for The Masters — a bucket-list trip for any greenkeeper — and he talks about what it was like walking those famous fairways and what he took away from seeing how the best do it.
